Blog tour: You Are (Not) Deadpool by Tim Dedopulos

Deadpool has a new mission and he’s going to need some help.

In You Are (Not) Deadpool, readers take charge of a character named Six (don’t dwell on it, it’s fine, it’s definitely not because Deadpool’s first five assistants died or anything), helping the Merc with a Mouth investigate rumours of Chitauri weapons being smuggled through New York City.

Armed with stats (Merc, Mouth, and Focus), a trusty die, and whatever objects you can find hidden throughout the pages, it’s up to you to get to the bottom of this Marvel mystery. Bonus points if you can keep Deadpool on mission!

As a Marvel fan, board gamer, and, of course, bookworm, You Are (Not) Deadpool ticked a lot of my boxes. It’s funny, clever, and a huge amount of fun to play through. The gameplay is fairly simple and rooted in the tradition of choose-your-own-adventure novels, but with a few extra processes to shake things up and ensure no play-through is the same!

The basic method of moving through the novel is by picking a page number, but there are times when you’ll have to do more than just make a random choice – and that’s where those stats come in. You can use them to influence other characters, start fights, or investigate suspicious areas, often combining them with the throw of a die. Certain objects you find along the way can increase or decrease your chances of success, and can also count to achievements when the game ends. At the end of a chapter, you may be able to choose your path or – more likely – it’ll have been chosen for you by the gameplay.

My first playthrough took around half an hour and, while I reached a Big Bad, it did not end well for me and my dear friends Deadpool. I did, however, unlock a few achievements along the way, and I’ll be diving in again soon to try and tick off a few more!

I can see the combination of Marvel and the choose-your-own-adventure style making this a really exciting jumping-off point for people who want to get into things like table-top RPGs, but maybe want to test the waters a little bit first. There’s also scope to make this a group game too – have one person guide the story and the others team up to decide where to go, what to do, and whether taking that shot of tequila is a good idea. (It worked out okay for me!)

Overall, this one gets five delicious chimichangas out of five, for being a little bit different, and a lot of fun!

Tim Dedopulos’ You Are (Not) Deadpool is out as an ebook on July 5th, with paperbacks to follow.
